So we must begin with our story. I learned to crochet when I was 8 or 9
years old with a group of young girls during a church activity called
Merry Misses. My teacher was right handed so she was unable to teach me
but she called a young teenager who could help me. I remember walking
to her house all by myself to get my first and only crochet lesson. She
taught me how to hold the yarn, make a chain, a single crochet and a
double crochet stitch. Then I was on my way. I loved it from the first
time I tried.
Back then, I had a little baby brother so I had my
mom buy some yarn, a crochet book and a single pattern book for babies.
I had no idea how to read a pattern but most importantly, I had no
idea what a gauge was. Oh, bubba. My first attempt was to make a pair
of pants for my little brother. It was hilariously a disaster to say
the least. So I put the hook away for several years.
After I was
married for two years, we were expecting our first child. Now was the
time to get serious about crochet. I knew from my previous experience I
needed to learn how to crochet correctly. I made several afghans but I
wanted more than that. I was blessed to come across Annie's Attic
Crochet Newsletter in 1985. Annie taught me how to read a pattern,
follow a gauge, and create beautiful crocheted items. She also gave me
the courage to expand beyond patterns and create my own one-of-a-kind
creations. During this time, I taught my mother to crochet and we have
never looked back.
Love it! Am looking forward to the sharing of your unique creations. Thanks for teaching me the basics. Mom
